Narrative:
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is in compliance with Principle 4.2 because the curriculum of UAH is directly related and appropriate to the purpose and goals of the University as stated in its mission statement, which commits the University to providing "an environment that facilitates intellectual, cultural, personal, professional growth [and which] fosters leadership, creative and critical thinking, clear communication, a respect for knowledge and the pursuit of truth..."
UAH offers a variety of baccalaureate and graduate programs in five academic colleges and graduate school, each of which contributes to the University's fulfillment of this mission. A complete list of undergraduate majors and degrees is to be found in the UAH Undergraduate Catalog 2003-2005, pp. 67-68, together with a detailed description of general degree requirements. A similar list of graduate degrees appears in the UAH Graduate Catalog 2003-2005, pp. 37-43.
Curriculum development at the baccalaureate level is initiated at the departmental level, forwarded for approval to the appropriate Dean, reviewed by the University Curriculum Committee of the Faculty Senate (see Principle 3.4.1), and approved by the Provost. The appropriate Dean, the Graduate Council Curriculum Committee, the Graduate Dean, and the Provost approve curriculum development at the graduate level. In all cases, curriculum proposals for new degree or certificate programs are considered in relation to the general mission of the University. Internal and external program reviews (see Principle 4.4) provide further opportunities to examine curricula and to ensure that the goals of the mission statement are met.
