The institution assumes responsibility for the academic quality of any course work or credit recorded on the institution's transcript.

Narrative:
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is in compliance with Principle 3.4.4 because the University has defined and published policies regarding evaluating, awarding, and accepting credit for transfer, experiential learning, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit. These policies are consistent with the University's mission and ensure that any credit accepted by the University is comparable to credit earned in residence at UAH. The UAH Undergraduate Catalog 2003-2005, p. 28, states that UAH follows practices specified in American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) Transfer Credit Practices of Selected Educational Institutions. Both students applying to the University as incoming freshmen and undergraduate transfer students are required to submit official transcripts from any previous institutions attended. These undergraduate transcripts are reviewed to determine admissions eligibility and transferability of credit. Transfer credit is normally awarded for academic courses completed at other regionally accredited institutions. Other credit is evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

UAH participates in the statewide transfer articulation agreement with Alabama two-year institutions as required by the 1994 law (Legislative Act 94-202 amended Section 16-5-8 of the Code of Alabama), which established an Articulation and General Studies Committee to develop a statewide articulation agreement for the transfer of credit among all Alabama public institutions of higher education.

AP, IB, and CLEP credit guidelines are also indicated in the UAH Undergraduate Catalog 2003-2005, pp. 56-57.
The policy for evaluation and acceptance of transfer work at the graduate level is published in the UAH Graduate Catalog 2003-2005, p. 52. This policy was developed by the Graduate Council and approved by the Provost:
With permission of the major department, students may transfer up to twelve semester hours of acceptable graduate credit earned in an approved institution and may count it toward a master's degree. All transferred credit may not be more than ten years old at the time of a student's graduation from UAH. It is transferable only if the student (1) was enrolled in a graduate school at the time it was taken and (2) has an overall average of B or better in graduate coursework at that institution. Students who have graduate credits from another campus of the University of Alabama must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours of acceptable graduate credit at UAH to receive a master's degree from UAH.

During the review of policies and publications for the preparation of the UAH Graduate Catalog 2005-2007 it was noted that the underlined sentences in the description above were ambiguous. This discrepancy was brought to the attention of the Graduate Council and, with the approval of the Provost, the second underlined sentence ("Students who have ...") was removed from the UAH Graduate Catalog 2005-2007, p. 50.

The transfer policy for the doctoral degree is described in the UAH Graduate Catalog 2003-2005, p. 54:
All credit toward the Ph.D. which has not been earned at UAH must be acceptable graduate credit from an approved institution. Such credit is transferred with approval of the major department if the student 1) was enrolled in a graduate program at the time the coursework was taken and 2) has an overall average of B or better in graduate work at that institution.

New graduate and transfer students applying to the University must submit official transcripts from each collegiate institution attended (UAH Graduate Catalog 2003-2005, p. 46). Each department determines the academic quality and acceptability of courses which are submitted for transfer to UAH and relays that information to the Graduate School for final approval.
