Narrative:
The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is in compliance with Principle 3.2.14 because the institution's policies concerning ownership of materials, compensation, copyrights and the use of revenue derived from the creation and production of intellectual property are clear and apply to students, faculty, and staff. Several policy statements address these issues.
Two Board of Trustees policies address ownership of materials. Board Rule 105 specifies University ownership of all records and files created by employees in the course of their employment. Board Rule 509 presents The University of Alabama System patent policy and requires staff, faculty, and graduates to assign rights in inventions/discoveries developed in the course of their employment.
The UAH policy on intellectual property is discussed generally in the UAH Faculty Handbook, Chapter 5. The UAH policy on patents addresses ownership, compensation, and revenue related to patentable inventions. It is published in the UAH Faculty Handbook, Appendix G, and applies to all University employees and graduate students. The institution's policy on copyrights relates to all faculty and staff. It addresses ownership of copyright in materials, compensation, and revenue and is published in the UAH Faculty Handbook, Appendix H.
